What is the function of a dental implant?
A dental implant is the equivalent of a tooth root that is screwed into the jawbone. It comes in the form of a titanium screw. In some cases, depending on the patient's needs, this artificial root will be fitted with a ceramic tooth, or it will be used with other implants to support a fixed bridge or removable denture.
How many teeth can dental implants replace?
Dental implants can replace one or more teeth. For people who are completely edentulous (have no teeth left), wearing dentures can be replaced by fitting resin or ceramic teeth on implants. This will allow them to have fixed, permanent teeth again.
How long does a dental implant last?
This will of course depend on maintenance and the local and general condition of your teeth. If these are good, dental implants can last for many years. The implant is made of titanium, which is currently the most biocompatible material available. The quality and quantity of the jawbone will have an impact on the success rate of implants. In addition, implants can last 15 to 20 years or more if the patient is in good general health, follows recommended hygiene practices and has regular dental check-ups.
Is the treatment painful?
No sensitivity is generally felt during or after the placement of dental implants, provided that the patient follows the surgeon's advice carefully. This procedure is often less painful than tooth extraction.
